AMERICAN PAINT HORSE ASSOCIATION
APHA Adds Rookie of the Year Award for 1998FORT WORTH, Texas - In 1998, American Paint Horse Association (APHA) amateur card holders will be able to contend for the association's newest year-end award Rookie of the Year. During the APHA's annual convention, held October 2-4 in Charlotte, North Carolina, the Board of Directors passed a rule adding the award to the amateur program.
To qualify, an exhibitor must not have won any breed association points in the Open, Youth, Amateur, or Novice divisions prior to the year of the award. In addition, the exhibitor must be a first-time amateur card holder currently in good standing with the APHA. Both Amateur and Novice Amateur competitors are eligible.
The award will be based on the total points accumulated per calendar year by a one rider/one horse team. In the case of a tie, the rookie earning points in the greatest number of events will receive the award. If the tie remains unbroken, the greatest number of wins will determine who receives the award.
Of the 62,000-plus APHA members today, more than 5,000 are amateur card holders. Based on the number of foals registered annually, the association is the second-largest equine registry in the United States.
