Youth of the Month: Clayton Cook-Mowery
Picture Not Available
Twelve year old Clayton Cook-Mowery has grown up with Miniature Horses. His parents, Ron Mowery and Jodi Cook of Palouse, WA, have owned and operated Kamiak Miniature Horses since 1979. Clayton got his first Miniature, Kamiak Sweetheart, when he was two years old. Sweetheart is on the way to an AMHR (American Miniature Horse Registry) Superior Dam award and Clayton is striving for recognition as a youth showman in this area. Since his Miniature is solely a broodmare, he has been showing the AMHA/AMHR gelding Stony Ridge Starlite in a variety of classes.Clayton, a high honor roll student at Gar-Pal Middle School, enters eighth grade this year. Besides Miniatures, he enjoys a variety of sports and is an avid baseball card collector. He has been a youth member of the Inland Empire Miniature Horse Club since its inception in 1990 and is an active 4-H participant in the Labo exchange program, where Japanese and American kids enjoy 30 day home visits. Clayton and his family have hosted three young Japanese boys and Clayton is planning a 30 day home visit in Japan in 1997.
To finance this trip, as well as adding to his college fund, Clayton has been selling Sweetheart's foals and putting the money in the bank. Clayton also helps around the farm and is no stranger to rakes and muck-buckets, early morning horse baths and hoof-black. He knows first hand that any successful pursuit takes work and dedication.
