Horse Racing at Playfair

Horse racing at PlayFair has provided several generations of Spokane families employment and entertainment. It is now in real danger of closure, as are many horse related activities, trail riding areas, arenas etc.

Racing dates allocated by the Washington Horse racing commission for 1995 are unacceptable to Eastern Washington horseman. Dates for 1995 total 50 days starting September 6 and ending November 27. Compared to 83 days in 1994 starting in early July. The loss of prime summer days and the extension into late November is unfair. Inclement weather in November makes racing not only unsafe, but usually impossible.

The Organization for the Preservation of Horse Racing in the Northwest (OPHRN) was established in December 1994 to negotiate on behalf of all Eastern Washington Horseman, Breeders, owners, related industry, and fans to save racing. Support and contributions by horseman has been outstanding. Continued involvement by everyone is critical.

Dual Card Simulcasting is one possibility of generating the required revenue. Emerald race meet would race days, PlayFair would race evenings, and both signals would be sent to Simulcast locations. The OPHRN requested a general questionnaire be sent to HBPA members. The request was denied.

If enough interest is generated for Dual Carding, it could provide PlayFair the chance to survive. For more information, please take a minute to complete the ballot and return it to
