A great loss has hit the Quarter Horse Industry as AQHA Champion, Superior Halter, ROM Western Pleasure and Heading and Heeling Horse, "Quincy Sun Dun" died on June 22 at the age of 19.
This beloved stallion, top ten at the AQHA World Show in 1981, holding over 131 AQHA points was owned by the Brown family of Rockford, Washington. "Sun Dun" was by AQHA Leading Sire, "Sir Quincy Dan." His grandsire was AQHA Champion, Superior Halter Horse, "Quincy Dan." Sun Dun's dam "Penny Perk," was a leading Working Cow Horse in the sixties for the states of Oregon, Utah, and Nevada. Her sire was a double bred "Shady Dell" stallion named "Poco Perk" who was an own son of "Snipper Reed." Sheila Kay Brown ( if soaking wet couldn't have weighed over 125 pounds), hauled "Sun Dun" down the road by herself accumulating over 100 of his AQHA halter points. a
This red dun stallion, purchased by Ross Brown from Dan Opie as a 2-month old suckling, produced over 300 foals in which many were: World and Reserve World Champions; Open, Amateur, and Youth AQHA Champions; APHA Champions; Superior Halter and Performance Champions; AQHA Performance Champions and multiple All-Around Circuit and Futurity winners.
As a sire, you can pretty much tell which get are "Quincy Sun Dun's" when they come into the ring. His foals are so distinctive. He has helped change people's attitudes towards taking their halter horses on to become successful performance horses too.
"Quincy Sun Dun" was an exceptional stallion; not just because of his beauty, but because of his kindness and intelligence that was passed on to his offspring. He left an indelible mark on so many lives. He will be greatly missed.
The Browns presently own 6th in the World, Superior Halter Stallion "Naturally Dun" a junior sire by "Quincy Sun Dun."
"Quincy Sun Dun" was the foundation of the breeding program at Sun Dun Ranch in Rockford, Washington. He was laid to rest and buried at the ranch on June 23rd. A grave marker will be erected in his memory.
